Fairfax, Va. -The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Dave Attell , and I think Chris feels the same, is that catchy tune from his old Comedy Central show "Insomniac". As a guy who really liked that show when it first aired, I wondered what Dave would do seeing him "live" and on stage. In the years since his old show, I've found myself reeling in laughter from guys like Patton Oswalt (a Sterling, VA native), Dave Chappelle (who i'll be seeing live on Sept 26th), and Lewis Black. I was wondering as I was driving to the Sweetwater Theatre in Fairfax, VA., if Dave would still be as funny as he was on the show. Well, I was wrong to wonder....He WAS FUNNY AS HELL!!
The evening started with an opening act that is based on his current Comedy Central show, a remake of The Gong Show. Dave did not host, some unknown guy did and he had 3 acts come out and they were massacred by the audience. The winner was this hot girl from Richmond, VA. Now, Dave comes out to a standing ovation, but it wasn't Dave. It was a maintenance man who looked like Dave and people started cracking up. Dave finally comes out through the audience while doing magic tricks...real magic tricks! He gets onstage and the first thing he says is "F___ Chris Angel!" and the crowd went nuts! Dave looked shorter than I thought he was and was a lot thinner. But the top of his head and the facial hair was all the same. He did a great job and I and my date Melissa were laughing our arses off throughout the 75 minute set. My favorite one was when he claimed that the late Steve Irwin was "assassinated" by crocs that hired the stingray to do it. My favorite part was that he described the stingray as the "Puertorricans of the undersea world, deadly... stabby...with big beautiful brown eyes." I lost it! I was laughing so hard. He then asked: "Am I right?" He then asked if there were any "Puertorrican-Americans in the house or as he put it "50% of all New Yorkers", my date yelled "right here" and pointed at me. We were in the 4th row to the left (great seats!!) and he looked at us/me and said "see, see what I mean...big beautiful brown eyes!" I almost pissed on myself! He also touched on very taboo areas like the similarities between child molestation and cigarette addition but did it so well done that there was no complaints, just hardy laughs from a great crowd!
Overall, I give the show, the Chris&Kenny-Gras rating of 4 tubs of hot-buttered popcorn with a large cherry coke! Dave Attell is a comic genius that I feel should get more exposure that he does. There wasn't a dry eye in the whole place, he was that damn funny! Unfortunately, the theatre barred photography of all kind, even camera phones, which was a shame since I was so close I would have gotten great pics! When he finished, he came out for an encore and answered some questions from the crowd. Someone asked if he was ever going to do "insomniac" again and he said that it might be back in 2010 but not on Comedy Central, he mentioned possibly Spike TV or G4. Thank you Mr. Attell for a glorious, fun-filled evening that I will remember forever. By the way, I made Melissa pay for having him call me out!...yeah...I stabbed her!"Come with me and you will see a late night freak show jubilee...Kick the Sandman in his sack...stay up late insomniac."
